10th Rose Pilgrimage
June 9-10, 2007
Don't miss the tenth rose pilgrimage of the San Diego Rose Society on June 9 & 10, 2007. We will depart early Saturday morning and power to Carpinteria. Our trip north will be enjoyable and informative with mini rose seminars, rose trivia games, travel prizes and rose growing videos. Our first stop will be Rose Story Farm where Danni and Bill Hahn replaced their lemon and avocado farm with 18,000 roses. Our tour will be led by Dan Bifano, a rosarian who has worked on the gardens of Oprah Winfrey and Barbra Streisand. We will enjoy a buffet lunch served in the garden in country style ambiance, along with a visit to the gift center. We will then travel the short distance to Somis where Keith Zary, the celebrated hybridizer, will give us a tour of the Jackson & Perkins facility. Our third rose experience on Saturday will be a visit to the garden of Sandy and Peter Gaal where we will see 350 roses in a charming, all-organic, acre garden. Here we will visit a 60s Peace garden and a children's fairytale garden among other themed gardens. We will spend the evening at the Grand Vista Hotel in Simi Valley where we have stayed on four previous pilgrimages.
On Sunday we will travel to the City of Hope Rose Garden where we will visit 2,000 rose bushes. The Rose Garden is a key element of the International Garden of Meditation, a place of peace for patients and their families. From there we will travel to the garden of Dr. Eve Jones , American Rose Society judge, founding member of Tinseltown Rose Society and long-time exhibitor. Eve has been growing roses for 78 years and now enjoys 2,000 roses surrounding her 100-year-old ancestral home. We will visit Marie Callender's for lunch and then continue our travel south to Santa Ana where we will visit the gardens of Jerry and Gloria Youngewirth. Claiming the great exhibitors Cal and Barbara Hayes as mentors, Jerry and Gloria grow prize winning roses which are regularly shown on the trophy tables of many rose shows. Our final destination will be Roger's Gardens in Corona Del Mar, some say the most beautiful home and garden center in America .
This will be my maiden pilgrimage to lead and I am incredibly excited. I know we will all build wonderful memories and pictures together as we share the beauty of the gardens. Remember, a garden is a place of peace and serenity that allows one to indulge in the sights, smells and even the spirit of nature; a garden provides a sanctuary from the pace and high stress of modern living. There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.
"Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to flow through your hair." Kahlil Gibran
"Look at the roses - they are so happy you are seeing them. It is simply unbelievable how happy they are to see you." Ruth Tiffany
Even with gas prices sky high and other costs up we were able to keep the cost of this pilgrimage to $190.00 per person, double occupancy, which will include all expenses other than dinner on your own at the hotel in Simi Valley . We can accommodate only fifty-two persons. Make your reservation through Ruth Tiffany, 6705 Maury Dr , San Diego , CA 92119 with a deposit payable to the San Diego Rose Society of $90.00 per person.
