Monthly Meeting
Program: John Bagnasco, co-host of Garden Compass Radio Show and contributing editor of Garden Compass Magazine, will give us a PowerPoint presentation called "Not in My Neighbor's Yard" featuring some of his favorite roses. John has hybridized a series of roses called "The Little Rascals" including 'Darla', 'Spanky' and 'Alfalfa.'
NOT IN MY NEIGHBOR’S YARD……….
Attendees of our March meeting will be awarded with the wit and wisdom of John Bagnasco of Garden Compass fame. John has been a host on the Garden Compass radio show for many years and is a contributing editor of the Garden Compass Magazine.
John is a highly innovative rose gardener, experimenting regularly with products and concoctions designed to produce the best roses possible. Growing hundreds of roses in his garden, traveling to rose gardens around the world, researching and trying many growing techniques has given John a multitude of topics on which he can knowledgeably speak.
John has chosen to share with us roses that you won’t find in your (or your neighbor’s) garden. He isn’t so interested in having the roses everyone else has. John will share with us some of his favorites in a collection of very intriguing and more difficult to find beauties.
Garden Compass Magazine is the garden enthusiast’s year-round guide to gardening in the Western United States. Garden Compass Magazine brings you all the valuable tips, innovative design ideas and creative inspiration you need to celebrate the best of living in your garden and the gardening lifestyle.

Monthly Meeting and Little Rose Show
Program: SHOW AND TELL AT THE SAN DIEGO ROSE SOCIETY
I wonder how many of you can remember kindergarten or 1st grade? Can you remember Show & Tell and how, when it was your turn, you agonized over what you would take? You wanted it to be your very best possession but you also wanted to take something no one else had taken, and you wanted to impress your teacher and your friends—all at the same time! You couldn’t wait until the day and woke early and put your prize in a big bag so no one could see it and ruin your surprise. And remember when the big moment came, you totally forgot how shy you really were and you marched up to the front and talked about your great offering. I bet not many of us can remember exactly what we took, but I’m guessing we can remember some of the feelings I have just described.
The joy of SHOW & TELL—that is what we are having at our April SDRS meeting. Everyone-absolutely everyone—is asked to bring a bloom or blooms of their favorite rose. We will sit in a big circle, and each rose will be handed around the circle while the person who brings the rose talks about it, answers questions, about how it does and why they like it.
April is the most perfect time for SHOW & TELL--- your blooms are just beginning, not much bad has had a chance to happen to them yet, you have been waiting for rose blooms for months now so you are primed to fall in love with your favorites all over again and, you will be so happy to have a favorite bloom in your hand you won’t hesitate to tell all about it.

Over $1,500 in cash prize money plus an impressive amount of growing plants from wholesale growers across the country will be awarded for winning entries. This year's attractions for top exhibitors will be not trophies but money, and more dear yet, plants of some of the best new varieties not yet on the market.
The show will offer a few things uncommon or never-before seen in the rose show organization. Rose societies and garden clubs from across the United States have been solicited to ship club entries for competition in the show. The winner will get bragging rights and $100 cash. The exhibitor winning best in section award traveling from the longest distance will receive $50 in cash in addition to other attached awards. Florists have been invited to enter non-competitive exhibits of greenhouse-grown roses to fill the show site with rooms full of roses. Dramm and Eckter, a leading greenhouse grower, is donating four dozen roses each to select customers for display in the show. Visitors to the show present at conclusion at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday will have the opportunity to buy rose flowers at bargain prices. The leading independent nurseries in San Diego County have pledged to send growing plants and other rose products for display at the show. 6:30 pm -- Exhibiting 101 - learn the tips to enhance the beauty of your rose blooms.
For each of you who love the beauty of roses, a series of classes is now available to help you learn how to bring out the best in our Queen of flowers. The major motivation for exhibitors in the San Diego Rose Society is the joy that comes from enhancing the attractiveness of blooms and sprays. We also derive considerable enjoyment from taking in the beauty of all the other roses at rose shows. The first class will begin at 6:30 PM in March in the right front of room 101 as you enter the door. Yes, we are going to start without roses. You will be given several pages of information including illustrations showing the desired form. There will be a general discussion of the material and what we hope to accomplish together.
The classes will continue through October. We will cover hybrid teas, minis, floribundas and sprays and more. Several different exhibitors will be involved to give you plenty of help. For those who have thought about entering our Little Rose Shows but were not sure how to get started, this is for you. If you have done some exhibiting but realize that there is a fair amount that you don’t know this is how to learn. We will begin with the basics and gradually get into the finer points of the processes needed to enhance the loveliness of your blooms.

Roses at Barona Valley Casino
**NOTE THE DIFFERENT TIME & PLACE
Our June meeting is a field trip to **Barona Valley Casino, 1000 Barona Road , Lakeside . Take the 8 east to the 67 north. Turn right at Willow Rd and left at Wildcat Canyon Rd.
If your idea of a casino is just a place to lose money (or make some, if you are lucky) you have not heard of Barona. This casino management has a strong focus on beauty and the grounds are overflowing with well-grown plants. Our own Dick Streeper has been instrumental in helping them build a new David Austin display garden which will be a premier site for evaluation of Austin roses on the west coast. The San Diego Rose Society has been invited to visit the rose gardens and be guests of the casino for the Ranch House Buffet.
This will be a great way to spend **Sunday, June 15. That is Father’s Day and our tour starts at **10 a.m. followed by lunch provided by the Barona. We will complete our day about 2 p.m. so you will still have time for more Father’s Day celebrations. There is free parking and you may stay and enjoy the casino and the grounds after our tour and lunch. If you forget and come to Balboa Park on Monday, no one will be there.—So don’t forget!
We need to know how many will be coming to enjoy the Ranch House Buffet. PLEASE email Ruth Tiffany at ruthsgarden@msn.com by Friday, June 13, with the number that will be coming.

There are more departing from the El Cajon site than from the others. To get information about leaving from another site, call 619 443 2300. If you have a Barona Club card, you just show it to the driver.
