Monthly Meeting, Potluck and Little Rose Show

Program:Cliff Orent (also known as "the desert dynamo"), owner and CEO of Ashdown West, an affiliate of Ashdown Roses, will be our guest speaker.

We are very pleased to have Cliff as our guest speaker this month. Dick Streeper has referred to Cliff as “the desert dynamo.” What lies behind Dick’s description of Cliff? Come to our May meeting to hear Cliff’s account of his recent move, along with 5,000 roses and rose seedlings, from the Palm Springs area in the low desert to Morongo Valley in the high desert. In the last six months, well over a hundred trips were made in U-Haul trucks to bring the roses in pots ranging from band size to 20-gallons and larger to their new home. You will hear humorous accounts of a few mishaps and near mishaps along the way, and will be given a preview of some of the roses that will be offered in the first few seasons of Ashdown West. Ashdown West will focus on varieties not currently available in North America, or offered with very limited availability, and you’ll see photos of expected offerings that range from rare old garden roses to modern exhibition and garden roses that haven’t yet made it over from Europe.

Lady Overtoun

Ashdown West was born out of Cliff’s enthusiasm over and commitment to the preservation of rare roses. It was at a meeting of the Specialized Conservation Committee of the World Federation of Rose Societies in Lyon France a few years back that Cliff first met Paul Zimmerman, owner of Ashdown Roses in South Carolina. One thing led to another and the result was the birth of Ashdown West and the close alliance between Ashdown West and Ashdown Roses.

Many of you know Cliff, the rose collector, from his appearances at rose shows throughout our District, from southern California to Las Vegas and from Bakersfield to the Arizona shows, usually arriving with his van filled to the brim with unusual polyanthas, OGRs and so on, and some of you have participated in rose shows with Cliff where in his enthusiasm to share some of his finds with others he’s entered fifteen or twenty polyanthas and a similar number of floribundas, rather than entering as many different classes as possible. We have it on good authority that he arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico with only an hour or so to go before the close of entries after driving through the night and getting slightly lost trying to find the show site, with his van stuffed with OGRs and more than a few modern blooms, to the delight of the show chair and committee who feared that their show would be less than exceptional due to poor weather in the weeks leading up to the show. An assembly line was set up to ensure that as many blooms as possible were removed from the van and entered into the show and a good time was had by all.

Cliff’s articles on a variety of rose-related topics have garnered awards from the ARS and have appeared in numerous publications, and most recently his article “O Rose, Who Dares to Name Thee” appeared in the 2006 ARS American Rose Annual. Word has it that he’s currently working on an article for the 2007 Annual on the rose collector as exhibitor, an appropriate topic given Cliff’s experience as both collector and exhibitor.

An American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian and Apprentice Horticultural Judge, Cliff planted his first rose bush in 2001 and never looked back. He is the immediate past president of the Desert Rose Society and remains active on their Board as well as serving as editor of their newsletter, the Desert Rose, and will co-chair the ARS 2009 Fall National Convention and Rose Show, to be held in Palm Springs in November 2009. This will be the first national convention and rose show to be held in the California desert and the first fall national to be held anywhere in our District in over 50 years. An active hybridizer, Cliff’s first rose introduction, ‘Mrs. Robinson,’ has been named for his rose mentor, Ramona Robinson, and will be introduced by Ashdown Roses and Ashdown West.

Cliff's first introduction: 'Mrs. Robinson'

Mrs. Robinson

We’ll be among the first to hear about his second introduction, ‘Trump Card’, which is…. Well, we’ll save some suspense for the meeting and let Cliff tell you about this rose and its unusual name!

And we’d be remiss in not mentioning that in a former life Cliff held a number of executive positions within the biotechnology industry, one of which was right here in La Jolla as Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of IDEC Pharmaceuticals (now Biogen-IDEC).

Free. Visitors are always welcome.

Monthly Meeting and Little Rose Show

Program: We are very pleased to have Brenda Landers-Smith from the California Coastal Rose Society as our guest speaker. She will present “The Art of Roses - Digital Art, Photography and Painting.”   Brenda will feature her latest art work while taking the viewer through a visually delightful journey examining the spark of inspiration roses provide the artistic eye.  In addition to sharing her modern art techniques the main emphasis will be sharing the basics of rose photography from grooming your roses for “portraits” to lighting and composition.

Brenda and her husband, Joe, grow 340+ exhibition roses.  She is an award winning horticulture and arrangement exhibitor and an American Rose Society Horticulture Judge and Consulting Rosarian. Brenda is also a lifetime member of the California Coastal Rose Society since 1996.  She also currently serves as the CCRS Vice-President and Web Designer of the ARS Queen of Local Web Sites: www.californiacoastalrose.com. She has also won several ARS Awards of Merit for her articles in addition to winning 6 honors this year in the National ARS Photo Contest. Brenda and her husband Joe have two miniature roses commercially available by Nor’East Miniature Roses this year, ‘Lady Bren’, a pink sport of  ‘Miss Flippins’ and ‘Chelsea Brittlyn’ a light pink sport of ‘Aristocrat’.

Brenda has been in love with roses, art and photography for as long as she can remember.  What was a hobby for many years has evolved into a daily artistic journey.  The digital age combined with her passion for art and love of nature result in her art today. The rose has been the single most influential aspect to her art.  Her paintings begin with her own original photographs.  They are then sculpted with light, drawn and painted with thousands of brush strokes with “paint pixels”, which are transformed into oil, watercolor, and a multitude of other mediums. The computer becomes the brush and canvas.   These new, modern art materials offer an unlimited means of expression.  “The Magic of the Garden” is a common theme in her work with other life forms such as dragonflies, birds and other garden creatures as well as various horticultural motifs.  All portray a tranquil, modern ambiance. People and Pet portraits are a new addition to her artistic endeavors creating memorable heirlooms to pass down through the generations. Her journey into the world of roses and art started in childhood.  Inspired by her mom, Peggy who grows beautiful roses and who is a gifted artistic influence in her life. Her devoted husband Joe is the driving force behind her art.  Through his support and patience, he provides the growing ground for her to flourish.    Her web site with her work can be found at www.brenlanders-smithstudio.com.

Free. Visitors are always welcome.

July 15, 2007 (Sunday) Point Loma Garden Tours

No monthly meeting in July or August.

July and August will feature tours of members' gardens. These are always terrific events. This year our July tours will feature 4 gardens in the Point Loma area.

Time: Noon - 4 pm.

Dick and Bonnie Goff: Roses with a Bay View.

Dick and Bonnie Goff's garden was featured in Rose Ramblings. It has also been featured in Sunset Magazine. And there are pictures of their garden in the new Sunset Western Gardening Book. They have, according to Dick, “about 35 - 40 roses dependant upon the behavior of the roses from one week to the next.  If a rose wants to often be fond of mildew, the Rose Mafia gives it the quick and untimely kiss of death.” This is a small, informal garden containing many colorful companion plants. It sits on a 30 foot wide lot which backs up to the water near the San Diego Yacht Club. Dick also warned that parking can be a problem.  Anyone with physical difficulties should feel free to park in their driveway. He also suggests that anyone interested in a nice walk after viewing their garden can walk along the water to the end of the anchorage (about 1/2 mile) and enjoy the various sights.

Bob & Marty Kolb: Roses with an Ocean View.

There are about 40 roses in the backyard garden, most of them enjoy an ocean view. The garden includes hybrid teas, grandifloras, climbers and miniature roses as well as companion flowers.

Linda & Herb Hitney: Roses with a University View

Linda and Herb have about 100 roses. Linda keeps the exact number a secret so that Herb doesn’t have too many thoughts of shovel pruning. The largest group, by number, is the miniature roses. There are also floribundas, hybrid teas, shrubs and old garden roses.

Lucy Borsenberger: Roses with a Harbor View

Lucy's garden features roses interplanted with many companion plants. She likes to maximize her space, so in addition to 34 roses, her house is surrounded with a mix of tropical plants, citrus trees, vegetables, and many other flowering plants. She even has potted roses on an upstairs deck so she can pick them daily to put in the house. She became interested in roses just a couple of years ago and is eager for any advice or suggestions that might be offered.

Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden Summer Tour

Declared one of the sixteen best public rose gardens of the world in 2004 by the World Federation of Rose Societies the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden in Balboa Park is a civic treasure. Our national floral emblem is beautifully displayed with two thousand roses of eighty different varieties. Many of these are All- America Rose Selection winners. The garden is located just east of the footbridge on Park Boulevard in Balboa Park. We will meet on Saturday, August 25 th at 9:30 A.M. at the north end of the garden under the huge arbor of Rosa fortuniana. Dick Streeper, one of the founders, will give a short talk about the history and importance of the rose garden. Knowledgeable consulting rosarians will then lead groups of about 15 people on different routes throughout the entire garden for about 45 minutes. Certain varieties of roses will be singled out by the tour guides to speak about their special characteristics with regards to fragrance, growth habit, use in the landscape and many other qualities. Questions are welcome. You may well make new selections for your own garden while on the tour. Mark the date on your calendar now.
