Annual Hands-On Rose Pruning Demonstration
Inez Grant Parker Rose Garden (on the east side of Park Boulevard)
Roger English, SDRS President, says:
"Learning to prune roses is an ongoing learning process. It took me several years before I began to feel comfortable using pruners, loppers and a saw to accomplish this important task. It is best learned by watching an expert demonstrate the procedure and then having him mentor you. Meet your consulting rosarians at 9:15 A.M. on Saturday, January 3rd at the north end of the garden. Bring your own pruners and gloves. We will break up into small groups and you will have the opportunity to improve your pruning skills on hybrid teas, floribundas and climbers. Floribundas and climbers are pruned quite differently than hybrid teas."
This annual event will take place at the north end of the Inez Grant Parker Rose Garden on the east side of Park Boulevard from 9:15 a.m. to noon on January 3rd

Specifically, she was webmaster for the NCNH District from 1996 to 2003. She has been webmaster for the American Rose Society Home Page from 1995 to the present. She is an ARS master consulting rosarian, a master gardener, a rose horticulture judge, and publisher of ARS and You. Jolene grows over 150 roses of all types including climbers, old garden roses, minis and minifloras, hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, polyanthas, Austins, romanticas, and shrubs. She lectures widely in computing issues, general gardening topics, and on roses. Get more information on her background at jolene_adams@ix.netcom.com. Monthly Meeting
(This program was planned for March, but Bob stepped in and substituted for the ailing Tommy Cairns originally scheduled to speak this month. It was a great talk. Thank you Bob.)
Program: Weird Rose Science
Our guest speaker for March is Bob Martin, nationally acclaimed speaker, writer and exhibitor. Bob is a past Pacific Southwest District Director of the American Rose Society, our parent organization. He is known for his creatively educational and entertaining programs and this new presentation has become one of his most requested.
"Weird Rose Science” is a program that examines the science of roses and rabbits from a different angle, from the ancient teachings of Euclid of Alexandria, the art of Leonardo da Vinci, the mathematics of Fibonacci, the observations of Albertus Magnus, through more recent developments in genetic research, hormones, and environmentally acceptable additions to the armamentarium of pest control measures.
Bob recently relocated to Escondido with his wife, Dona, and is currently a candidate for the office of ARS Vice President. Don't miss this opportunity to get to know him better!

Monthly Meeting and Little Rose Show
Program: Roses of New Zealand
Walt and Diana Kilmer traveled to New Zealand in November, 2007, to judge the National Rose Show of New Zealand . Their trip included several weeks of visiting the large, lush gardens that New Zealand is known for. Since November is springtime down under, the roses were at their peak, and Kilmers got lots of photos of roses, many of which we don’t see in this part of the world. They will be sharing their photos and experiences with us with their memorable program at our April 20 meeting.
Walt and Diana are long-time consulting rosarians and horticulture judges. They have traveled extensively to judge rose shows and rose trials in the United States and abroad. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the rose gardens of New Zealand at their best!

Don't miss the 11th rose pilgrimage of the San Diego Rose Society on Sunday May 3, 2009. We will depart from the Old Town Transit Center in San Diego early Sunday morning and proceed north, relaxing as we enjoy rose growing tips and stories from our on-board consulting rosarians. Our first stop will be the Descanso Gardens in LaCanada Flintridge. The rose garden or International Rosarium displays approximately 2,600 rose plants including species, old garden and modern roses with the hybrid tea class being the best represented. The rose collection began in the late 1940s as a one acre project for Mr. Boddy and hybridizer Dr. Walter Lammerts. Revamped and designated the International Rosarium in 1994, the rose garden now covers five acres. Here is a fun read about the gardens.
Our next stop will be RoseHills. Popular to many visitors to Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier is the Pageant of Roses Garden, which first opened to the public in 1959. Over the years this 3.5 acre garden has grown in the variety of roses displayed. Today, the garden features approximately 7,000 rose bushes in more than 600 varieties . In 1984, the garden was honored by the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) with the coveted Public Rose Garden Achievement Award, designating it the most outstanding public rose garden in the nation. There is always something new to see at the Pageant of Roses Garden. As an official display garden for both the ARS and the AARS, as well as a miniature display and test site for the ARS, the garden receives the most up-to date roses available.
A short drive from Rose Hills will take us to Exposition Park . It's not exactly a park in a traditional sense, but the Exposition Park Rose Garden is a kind of urban oasis for Los Angelinos and tourists looking for an escape from the hectic urban environment. A sunken garden featuring more than 20,000 rose bushes of nearly 200 varieties of roses is such a bright spectrum of hues and shapes to make any botany fan go wild. The garden is particularly popular for weddings with the aromatic fragrance of roses wafting throughout the entire grounds. We are making our pilgrimage to the park during the height of the blooming period to really take advantage of the smells and palate of colors that fill the park. The park has been a rosy shade of red within the city limits since 1928. We will enjoy our lunch here amid the roses.
After all this time with flowers and gardens, some of us may be yearning for a flower or a rose of our own to take home as a memory of our trip. Or some of us may just want to see more roses. For all of us, our next stop will be Tropic World Nursery in Escondido. There will be many wonderful, well priced roses for us to buy and room on the bus for them to join us.
We will then jaunt into Escondido to the garden of Gary and Sonja Bulman. Gary has been growing and showing roses for years in Escondido. He is an American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian and has been providing information to new rose growers through our society newsletter, our monthly meetings and our annual rose care seminar. Growing several hundred roses, Gary exhibits and wins regularly at the Del Mar Fair. We are excited to view his private rose garden.
Happy, and filled with the memories of roses blooming, we will return to San Diego as the sun is setting, about 7:30pm.
The cost for this incredible day of roses is a very affordable $75 which covers a comfortable charter bus, snacks, and admission to Descanso, Rose bags, and lunch. Our bus has limited seating so reserve your seat now with a check for the San Diego Rose Society sent to myself, Ruth Tiffany. If you have questions or need more information please call me at 619-548-6950 or email me at ruthsgarden@msn.com
Pilgrimage Flyer and Reservation Form
Our journey in search of beautiful roses will end, but remember the essence of making a search for the very best roses in the world never is complete and all should put the dates of November 11-15, 2009 on the calendar. This is when the American Rose Society National Convention is being held in Palm Springs. It will be another great rose trip!!!

ANOTHER SPECIAL OPEN GARDEN
Cliff Orent will host the second annual Mother’s Day open garden at his EuroDesert Roses garden in Morongo Valley on Sunday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. After over 500 visitors toured his garden this past Mother’s Day, it was decided that this will be an annual event. Further details will be provided as the date approaches, but mark your calendars now to stroll through what has become one of the largest and most diverse rose gardens in the country, featuring over 5,000 roses on five acres in a tranquil high desert setting that’s only a half hour’s drive from most locations in the Coachella Valley. Monthly Meeting, Potluck and Little Rose Show
Program: Suzanne Horn will speak on David Austin & The Romance of English Roses.
The speaker for our May meeting is Suzanne Horn from Glendale, California. By way of background, Suzanne is a Consulting Rosarian, a successful exhibitor, an Accredited ARS Judge, and has taught at two District Consulting Rosarian Seminars and a Judging Seminar. Also a writer, she penned the Rose of the Month articles for the Pacific Southwest District webpage from 2004 through 2006, and has also written for the ARS webpage, Rose Exhibitor’s Forum, the American Rose magazine and for two ARS Annuals.
Suzanne presently grows about 450 roses of all types, and about 55 of those roses are classified as English Roses. These are the most popular of the modern shrub roses, and were introduced to American gardens by famed British hybridizer, David Austin. Suzanne has fallen in love with these romantic, old-style roses, and has prepared an hour-long PowerPoint presentation on the subject that is punctuated with hundreds of beautiful photographs.
Suzanne will discuss the history of David Austin Roses and what makes them truly romantic as well as the family lines of these roses, varied forms and growth habits, shade tolerance, fragrance, growing tips, and their varied uses in the garden. Monthly Meeting and Little Rose Show
Program: Dr. Joel Ross will speak on propagating roses.
“Asexual Propagation of Roses” by Joel Ross M.D., Consulting Rosarian -ARS
This talk and demonstration will survey some of the methods by which rose plants may be multiplied asexually. It will deal in depth with multiplication of “cuttings” with a discussion of selection of potting material, preparation of plant material, hormonal manipulations to improve “take” percentages, use of individual greenhouses for environmental control while awaiting root growth, light temperature and water needs while awaiting root growth and “hardening off” when the plant material has matured sufficiently to be removed from the greenhouse environment. The favorite alternate measures utilized by Rosarians who are quite successful at propagation will be compared and contrasted. A very basic description of budding technique will also be described and illustrated, concentrating on “T “ graft technique in order to present a fuller picture of the variety of methods available for asexual propagation.
Joel has been growing roses since 1997 and has approximately 400 plants at present in his Rancho Santa Fe home garden both in ground and in pots. His rose accomplishments include:

Monthly Meeting, Potluck and Little Rose Show
Program: Show & TellOur October meeting will be a busy one! First, we will have our semi-annual potluck
dinner. In addition, all attendees should bring at least one rose bloom. One bloom each
will be used during part of the evening’s program. Our main event will
be “Show and Tell,” an opportunity to share your favorite rose and tell us about yourself
and your garden. We are so excited to have over 100 new members from the Del Mar Fair,
most of whom we do not know. This is the time to meet them as well as get to know the
rest of us better. Now, the rose you bring for “Show and Tell” doesn’t have to be your most favorite
rose. It could also be the most unusual, the largest or smallest or tallest. Or, it could just
be the one that is blooming on October 19. We love ALL roses and we are thankful that
we have so many rose enthusiasts in our group who share this love. We look forward to a
good turnout for this meeting. The balance of the evening will be a time for questions and answers on rose care, fertilization, soils or whatever you can think of. Consulting rosarians will be on hand to respond.Free. Visitors are always welcome.
